A new scam has been claiming victims for several months in France: an SMS from Health Insurance asks you to update your Vitale card. How is it set up and how not to fall into the trap?

For several months, a new SMS scam has been claiming victims. This time she uses the Vitale card, the crooks pretend to be health insurance but also your bank. According to cybermalveillance.gouv.fr, the platform in charge of assisting victims of cybermalevolence, this is the second most widespread scam currently in France.

An SMS and a site similar to that of Health Insurance

It all starts with a simple SMS asking you to renew your Vitale card by following a link to a website. On this site, you will be asked to fill in your name, your address… but also your bank details, to pay a few euro cents for sending your new card. The scam works because the site to which the victims are referred uses the codes of the real Health Insurance site.

But the fraud does not stop there. After falling into this first trap, you might receive a call from your banker, to “help” you put an end to this scam. He will ask you for bank information, which will serve him, in fact, to finalize his scam.

How to avoid falling into this trap

The service-public.fr site and the Health Insurance point out several elements to avoid being ripped off. On the one hand, updating your Vitale card is a free operation that is only done on specific terminals in pharmacies, at your doctor’s office. If in doubt, if you receive an SMS (or an email) from Health Insurance, it is advisable to go directly to the Ameli.fr site, without going through the link. In your personal space, you can check your information and your messages.

On the other hand, if Medicare calls you, one of these three numbers may appear on your phone: 3646; 01 87 52 00 70 (as part of the “Go to” operations for vaccination against Covid-19); 09 74 75 76 78 (as part of the contact tracing system in the fight against the virus).

Finally, be wary of a call from your bank asking for your account or credit card number.

What if it’s too late…

If, despite your vigilance, you have given your bank details to a scammer, contact your bank as soon as possible.

Then, you can report this scam on the dedicated website, internet-signalement.gouv.fr, and file a complaint at the police station or gendarmerie. You can also send the fraudulent SMS to 33 700, the platform for combating voice and SMS spam.
