Unemployment insurance ended 2021 debt-free

Zurich (awp) – Unemployment insurance may have closed 2021 with a loss of 186 million Swiss francs, but the fund remained debt-free. The Confederation has taken over the compensation in the event of a reduction in working hours (RHT) due to the Covid-19 crisis.

The Unemployment Insurance (AC) Compensation Fund ended the 2021 financial year with total income of 14.07 billion Swiss francs, compared to 17.40 billion in 2020, and total expenditure of 14.26 billion ( 17.26 billion). The loss amounted to 186 million Swiss francs, after a surplus of 145 million Swiss francs a year earlier. The compensation in the event of partial unemployment of 5.65 billion Swiss francs was paid for by the Confederation, explained the State Secretariat for the Economy on Thursday.

As an annual average, the number of unemployed registered with AC amounted to 137,614, a rate of 3.0%, down from 2020, which counted 145,720 unemployed equivalent to 3.1 %.

The Federal Audit Office still has to revise the closing of the financial year and the Federal Council formally approves it.

The Seco points out that “the Covid-19 crisis is less and less limiting the economy”, but that “unemployment insurance expenditure will only decrease with a certain delay in 2022 due to the uncertainties linked to the war in Ukraine”. This poses “big risks for the global economy”.
