Since 1974, the Swiss town of Davos Klosters has hosted the World Economic Forum, which is held there once a year. This year 2022 has been marked by a palpable change, in particular a strong incursion of the metaverse in the debates. Not only at the program level, but also at the level of the event configuration itself.
The metaverse, an increasingly popular virtual world
For a few months now, the term ” metaverse is on virtually everyone’s lips. It is found in many news topics, and not only in the world of crypto currencies. But what is it? Simply put, it’s a ” 3D virtual world accessible to everyone via specific equipment such as glasses or an augmented reality helmet “.
Interested parties can evolve in this parallel universe and discover practically the same elements that exist in our “real world”. Indeed, many developers have contributed to create a world that is growing more and more, with more and more complete services.
It starts with a simple avatar that everyone can customize as they wish to evolve in this universe, as we would do in the famous video game “Sims”, except that this is a reality. Virtual certainly, but very real where everyone plays their own role and can spend crypto currencies.
There are already a multitude of services accessible in the metaverse, such as:
- participate in conferences
- attend concerts
- go to the cinema
- go shopping
- To visit museums
- make investments (buy land for example)
All this testifies to the economic interest of the metaverse today. It is undoubtedly strong from this observation that the 2022 edition of the World Economic Forum has placed the metaverse at the very heart of its program.
The metaverse in Davos
Many topics were discussed at Davos, but the metaverse was undoubtedly the one that captivated the public the most. Beyond the very definition of the concept, it is security within this virtual world which concerns the majority.
The Minister of State of the United Arab Emirates spoke in particular about the importance of implement international security standards within this virtual world which appeals to a growing number of people.

This idea was supported by a manager at Meta who suggested the need to classify information shared to the public according to the target (especially children vs adults).
A format change at Davos inspired by how the Metaverse works
Apart from these fairly technical aspects, Davos was above all the scene of the genesis of a new format of the World Economic Forum. Since this universe knows no borders, this event should be able to exist beyond spatio-temporal constraints, like decentralized finance.
A platform could thus be set up within the metaverse itself. and public-private cooperation could be held there throughout the year. In any case, Microsoft and Accenture were asked to work on this format which has certain interests. Format which was also tested during the 2022 edition of the Forum.
Today, there are many projects and promises. Their realization will undoubtedly be done over time. One thing is certain, however: the metaverse is now well present in the economic equation at the global level. The leaders present in Davos were also totally immersed in this atmosphere.
According to Canadian journalist Andrew Lawton’s tweet, between two workshops, participants were able to take a break from Facebook’s metaverse through the “Meta Immersive Learning” program. Perhaps a way for Mark Zuckerberg to relaunch his “Meta” metaverse and his native token after it was blocked by the American authorities.
