News hardware Tesla: the Autopilot of Elon Musk’s electric cars is still being restrained in France
This is not the first time this has happened: the laws of Europe, to which France is subject, have just gotten in the way of a feature used across the Atlantic on electric cars. As the United States sees Tesla’s steady advances in self-driving, we are once again held back.
The Autopilot of the American Tesla is already much more efficient than that of the electric cars of Europe
You may not know it, but an American Tesla is much more autonomous than a European Tesla. The regulations of the old continent are very strict on the subject, and we are thus deprived of a lot of functionalities.
For a handful of dollars, in the United States, Elon Musk’s electric cars are capable of:
- Identify and take into account only the red lights and stop signs
- Se walk in town all alone
- manage only the roundabouts
- Take them turns at more than 3 m/s²
- Move in a parking lot without a driver behind the wheel (we call it the Auto Exit)
- Change lanes and negotiate freeway exits alone
If you yourself are the owner of a Tesla, you are surely telling yourself that this last point is not exclusive to the USA and that you benefit from it in France. And much more for a long time, precisely.
French Tesla owners will lose Autopilot functionality
Since February 2022, the German authorities have been working on Tesla’s Autopilot. They then realized that the automation of the exits from the limited access lanes did not comply with European laws.
Consequence: Tesla seems to have temporarily stopped certain vehicle deliveries pending the update that will bring them back into the nails of the law.
This has already impacted several European countries. We have no confirmations concerning France, but it would not be surprising to see France also hit by delivery delays.
Make the most of your last moments with the automatic lane change, you will very soon have to operate the turn signal manually.
Small sacrifices on our Tesla electric cars for our good?
This article may appear to charge against our local rules. He is not. If the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe made all these decisions, it’s to protect us.
You may not realize it, but some Autopilot options that we are deprived of are quite faulty in the USA. Unlike the US, Europe is not a vast open-air laboratory into which not-quite-ready features can be imported.
American Teslas are factually more dangerous than ours.
That being said, some laws, like the Lane Change Law, may seem outdated because these features have almost no issues. Tech is changing fast and laws are going to have to keep up with this frenetic pace if we don’t want to be left behind.
