Do you still remember the Tesla Roadster? Tesla’s sports coupe was unveiled in 2017, but yet, 5 years later, we are still waiting for it! The start of production of the vehicle has indeed been postponed several times. And if Elon Musk had not chosen to orbit a prototype aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 Heavy a few years ago, one would have thought that the vehicle had been forgotten.
Ok, so you want to pre-book the Tesla Roadster? No problem. Well… if you can afford it. On the corresponding Tesla page we can indeed read: “Roadster reservations require a deposit of €4,000 to be paid by credit card, and a second payment of €39,000 to be paid by bank transfer within 10 days. Reservations are not final until payment by bank transfer has been received”. Ouch.
Want to pre-order the Tesla Roadster? Deposit €43,000 now, thank you.
Fortunately, these deposits are fully refundable, for example if the vehicle were again delayed, which would not necessarily be so surprising. But it is difficult to know who, concretely, is ready to deposit such a sum – knowing that it is, even in the event of reimbursement, pure hoarding, without the slightest interest rate. Suffice to say that your money would be, in the absence of further information on the production schedule or final price of the vehicle, better placed elsewhere even though you can always recover it.
The selling price of the Tesla Roadster should start in France at 172,000 euros, the price of a Ferrari F430 Spider, or a Lamborghini Gallardo, both available for sale now (it’s up to you) . We also note that this price is of the order of that of a Bentley Continental GT, for example. Obviously the appeal of the Roadster is elsewhere: not only does the model – 100% electric – promise incredible performance with a 0-100 km/h of barely 2.1 seconds which embeds you in the seat, 400 km/h of top speed, a torque of 10,000 Nm…
But in addition it delivers an autonomy never seen on this type of vehicle, of the order of a thousand kilometres. All these exceptional characteristics probably explain the delays, especially since it is hard to imagine this kind of luxury car seducing as much as a Model 3 or Model Y for example. Still, Tesla refuses to give the slightest detail, at this stage, on the number of lucky ones who actually reserve the Roadster at this price. And that we will be very surprised if those who reserve their Roadster today will receive their vehicle before the end of 2023.
