Tesla celebrates the Berlin factory… where production is still not authorized

Initiated in 2019, the construction of Tesla’s first European Gigafactory is nearing completion. An event that the manufacturer wanted to celebrate with its community on the occasion of a “Giga Fest”. Organized this Saturday, October 9, it brought together several thousand people who were able to discover the site and the various production stations. Elon Musk was also present during the day.

Start of production expected in November

Electronic music, Ferris wheel, circuit for children and vegetarian food-trucks… If the atmosphere was festive this Saturday, October 9, Tesla’s first European gigafactory is not yet authorized to start production. Still in progress, the last public consultation should end on October 14th. A final step after which the German Ministry of the Environment should decide and give the green light.

According to Musk, the first Tesla electric cars from Berlin’s Gigafactory are expected to roll off the production line as early as next month. Forecasts to be taken with the utmost caution. Asked by AFP, the environment ministry of the Land of Brandenburg, where the plant is located, said that ” no date had yet been set for approval.

At full capacity, the Tesla factory in Berlin should be able to produce up to 500,000 vehicles per year. But it will take time before the site reaches its maximum performance. ” It will take longer to reach volume production than it took to build the factory “warned the boss of Tesla.

In addition to assembling its cars, Tesla also plans to produce its new generation of cells in Berlin. Volume production is expected by the end of 2022.
