Interviewed by CNBC at the Miami event, Blockstream co-founder and CEO Adam Back renowned cryptographer and member of cypherpunkgave more information about this project:
“People like to debate the different factors to consider when mining bitcoins. We said to ourselves that we had to prove it. Let’s have an open dashboard for people to play the game, and maybe that will inspire other players to participate.”
All mining rig performance information will be accessible in real time to the public : energy production, total number of bitcoins mined and even statistics on solar energy and storage. Adam Black also explained that this one would be designed to be a proof of concept (PoC) for Bitcoin mining with 100% renewable energy:
“This is a step to prove our thesis that bitcoin mining can fund zero-emission power infrastructure and build economic growth for the future. »
For now, we don’t know the dimensions yet and the energy performance of the installation, nor the mining capacity with which it will be equipped.

Musk’s mission to make Bitcoin greener
It is no longer a surprise, Elon Musk is a fervent defender of the environment and renewable energies. Last May, he had strongly criticized the environmental impact of mining by the Proof-Of-Work (PoW), announcing at the same time that Tesla would no longer accept payments in BTC.
Since then, the CEO of Tesla works to support Bitcoin miners in their ecological transition. Last year, he organized a meeting with North American miners to convince them to share their current and future strategy. use of renewable energies in their activitycalling on their colleagues around the world to do the same.
I spoke with North American Bitcoin miners. They have pledged to publish current and planned use of renewables and to require WW miners to do so. Potentially promising.

Subsequently, this meeting led to the creation of the Bitcoin Mining Council, a tip from bitcoin miners“in order to promote transparency in energy consumption and accelerate sustainability initiatives around the world “.
These thoughts also led Digital Marathon commit to achieving carbon neutrality for all of its mining centres. The Nasdaq-listed company had announced the creation of a huge mining park in Texas, completely powered by renewable energy.
It seems like the future of renewable energy is currently being played out in Texas. And Bitcoin mining is not for nothing, on the contrary. By settling in this area, the miners have created a financial incentive around this economically unattractive region. Moreover, Elon Musk recently inaugurated his Gigafactory there, a Tesla factory of more than 900,000 square meters.
