The IBA innovates. The international boxing body announces that it has tested, “with success“, a new technology intended both for better protection of athletes and for more precise judging of fights. A group of boxers from several different countries served as a panel, at the last European Youth Championships, to test a new model of impact-sensing mouthguard. The data was entered and analyzed anonymously and securely. With the help of artificial intelligence, they will be used for research on brain protection and the process of verifying combat judgment. These new mouthguards are equipped with accelerometers, gyroscopes and transmitters. Accessible in real time, the data collected should be able to alert doctors at ringside to possible risks of trauma. Their analysis can also be used to evaluate the fights, by establishing a correlation with the evolution of the score. The IBA explains in a press release: this new technology is only in the early stages of research, but it is not intended to eventually replace referees.
