Science and technology: continuing education for school teachers from the start of the 2022 school year

With the Mathematics Plan and the French Plan, the continuing education of school teachers has been transformed: based on their needs, encouraging cooperation around the production of resources and tools, it allows teachers to have more time to exchange around their practices and to deepen their pedagogy, as close as possible to their class. Such a development meets the expectations of teachers, as evidenced by the satisfaction surveys conducted on each of these two levels.

Completing its offer, in the same spirit and with the same aims, but according to a different deployment, the Ministry of National Education, Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation are launching a training plan on teaching science and technology to meet the needs of pupils and teachers in primary school. This plan will be deployed from the start of the 2022 academic year.

This initiative is based on a unanimously shared observation: the knowledge and skills of students in science are fragile, as revealed by the international studies TIMSS and PISA. School teachers also express a strong demand for training in science and technology teaching, most of them having no initial scientific training.

This plan also responds to the essential challenges, on the one hand, of developing methodical thinking and, on the other hand, of scientific, technological and industrial sovereignty aimed at by the major investment plan for the future, “France 2030”. It joins the recommendations of the report, recently published, of the General Inspectorate of Education, Sport and Research on “Initial training in the light of new scientific, technological, environmental challenges and in a perspective of reinforced sovereignty of France: state of play and territorial policies”, in particular that inviting to facilitate an integrated approach to science and technology.
The initiation of all students into the scientific approach, the development of their methodical thinking, the acquisition of knowledge and fundamental skills in science and technology from their first years of schooling are the necessary conditions for training future enlightened citizens and aware of how science is constructed and of the differences between proven facts and beliefs, but also of the emergence of future scientific and technological vocations that will support this sovereignty.

The Science and Technology Plan will adopt the model of local training, attentive to teachers’ requests. It will be based on the expression of their needs to adapt the modalities of the proposed training. The training offer will therefore be flexible, local, initiated on a voluntary basis and adjusted to demand. It will also take into account the other training priorities – in French, mathematics, secularism and the values ​​of the Republic – with which it will be articulated. At the national level, a network of referents deployed in the departments will be set up and supported by training sessions.
A set of resources will also be offered to help teachers in their teaching in the classroom, in the development and conduct of scientific and technological projects that promote student involvement, in particular through the dynamics of the investigation process.

Finally, rolled out in concert with the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, this plan will benefit from the increased mobilization of many partners already involved in various schemes, including the “Science with and for Society” strategy. – institutions, universities and colleges, learned societies, but also industrial players – who will be able to bring their expertise locally to contribute to the training of professors, as well as to their support in their scientific and technological projects. Exchanges between teachers and science and technology professionals, as well as the discovery by students of professions and people who do science are essential contributions to motivation and to the achievement of the objectives assigned to this teaching.
