Reaction Dynamics Accelerates Development of Hybrid Launcher Technology

NGen’s $4.8M R&D Project Acquires Velo3D’s First Sapphire 3D Printer in Canada

HAMILTON, Ontario, June 01, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Next Generation Manufacturing Canada (NGen), the industry-led community behind Canada’s advanced manufacturing projects, announces his most recent project with Reaction Dynamics (RDX), a Quebec manufacturer of orbital launchers. RDX will acquire one of the most advanced 3D printing technologies in the world through a $4.8 million research and development project supported by NGen. This acquisition is also the first domestic implementation of Velo3D’s smart metal additive manufacturing solution – already used by some of the world’s most advanced launcher manufacturers to produce critical engine parts. Reaction Dynamics will leverage Velo3D’s metal additive manufacturing technology to manufacture environmentally friendly, safe and affordable commercial launchers by 2024.

Velo3D is a pioneering metal additive manufacturing technology company for mission-critical parts. Its comprehensive solution, which combines Flow preprint software, Assure quality assurance software and the Sapphire 3D metal printer, has the unique ability to improve the way high-value metal parts are built. The result takes the form of parts with complex geometries intended for real-world applications, such as the manufacture of Reaction Dynamics’ one-piece engines. This printing technology greatly simplifies and speeds up the manufacture of parts, while making them more reliable.

“We are grateful for NGen’s significant financial support and proud to have access to one of the industry’s most advanced technologies for manufacturing parts for the aerospace sector,” said Bachar Elzein, Founder, President and CEO. CEO and CTO of Reaction Dynamics. Sapphire gives us a competitive advantage by allowing us to accelerate our manufacturing rate without compromising quality in any way. This brings us closer to our goal of sending green and affordable orbital launchers, making Canada a cutting-edge green launch destination. »

“By investing in the development of transformative solutions, Next Generation Manufacturing Canada is ensuring that innovative Canadian companies get the support they need to deliver world-class Canadian solutions for new and growing markets, such as commercial launch, said the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, the Honorable François Philippe Champagne. The Government of Canada is proud to support this collaborative project which will increase Canada’s ability to design and produce the next generation of rockets domestically while ensuring our aerospace industry remains globally competitive. »

“NGen is pleased to support a safer, greener and more cost-effective Canadian solution to commercial launch services,” said Jayson Myers, President and CEO of NGen. This project underscores the importance of strategic investment in new, advanced manufacturing capabilities that can catapult Canadian companies to the forefront of their respective industries. »

“Reaction Dynamics’ goal of producing greener and more efficient launcher engines dovetails well with the benefits of our complete solution, as it can help customers consolidate dozens of parts into single components, which improves thrust-to-weight ratio, says Zach Murphree, Velo3D’s vice president of business development. We look forward to working closely with Bashar and the RDX team as they continue their journey to orbit. »

The grant is being awarded to Reaction Dynamics and its manufacturing partner, Amrikart Corporation, through Canada’s Global Innovation Clusters, which supports the government’s Innovation and Skills Plan. NGen is dedicated to building next-generation manufacturing capabilities and continues to invest in collaborative and transformative manufacturing and technology projects that will leave a lasting legacy for Canada’s advanced manufacturing ecosystem.

About Reaction Dynamics
Founded in 2017, Reaction Dynamics (RDX) is a launch vehicle manufacturer on a mission to enable mainstream access to space with one of the greenest, safest and most affordable launch vehicles ever created. It has developed revolutionary launch technology that takes advantage of a new hybrid propulsion system that significantly reduces the environmental impacts of orbiting compared to current technologies. This technology could enable routine and affordable access to orbit. Aurora, the company’s first demonstration suborbital launch vehicle, is currently undergoing qualification tests for a first flight scheduled for late 2022.

About Next Generation Manufacturing Canada (NGen)
NGen is the industry-led not-for-profit leading Canada’s Advanced Manufacturing Supercluster.
