I believe this is the first time this has happened in the history of cancer. Dr. Luis A. Diaz Jr. of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center still can’t believe it. Along with other doctors, he published an article Sunday in the New England Journal of Medicine about a clinical trial of 18 patients with colorectal cancer.

For six months, these 18 patients received a dose of dostarlimab every three weeks. This drug, at $11,000 a dose, “ unmasks cancer cells, allowing the immune system to identify and destroy them “, explains the New York Times.

The cancer is gone

The results described are astounding: these 18 patients seem to have been totally cured. No trace of cancer is detectable on examinations, including MRI. ” It’s unprecedented “, abounds Dr. Alan P. Venook, colorectal cancer specialist at the University of California at San Francisco, to the New York Times. The icing on the cake: no significant side effects were observed.

Although it is not known at this stage whether the patients are definitively cured (can the cancer come back?), all the specialists questioned call for this test to be reproduced.

A drug that exists in France

Dostarlimab is known in France as Jemperli. It is indicated for the treatment of adult patients with relapsed or advanced endometrial cancer. In October 2021, the High Authority for Health issued an unfavorable opinion on its reimbursement by Social Security.

The health authorities then put forward “ lack of robust comparative data », « the very preliminary nature of the available efficacy data “, or ” greater risk-taking than for drugs whose effectiveness is based “.
