It is in Brittany that home insurance costs the least

Insuring your accommodation costs an average of 216 euros per year in France. But there are strong regional disparities.

You have to pay, on average, 216 euros per year to ensure your accommodation in France. All regions combined, you have to spend more to insure a house than an apartment, 260 euros on average, against 180 euros, reveals Assurland, a specialist in online insurance comparators, in a study. While these figures are relatively stable compared to last year, the cost of insurance has risen sharply in recent years.

Olivier Moustacakis, co-founder of Assurland.com, explains: “The increase in the amount of property to be insured, the number of burglaries (up sharply from 2010 to 2013) and climatic events have led to a change in the insurance premium. home insurance by 33% in ten years”. If the insured opt at 56% for the basic formula, which includes guarantees for civil liability, water damage, theft, fire, natural disasters… with an indemnity for obsolescence deducted in the event of a claim, they are still 44% to choose the superior formula, which includes additional guarantees (electrical damage, glass breakage, valuables, etc.) and replacement of furniture on the basis of replacement value. This option is billed around 20 to 25% more expensive, recalls Assurland.

Rise in the number of burglaries

Depending on the region, prices vary greatly. Thus, it is in Brittany that it is better to have taken up residence. In this region, the number of claims declared and the cost of home insurance are indeed the lowest in France. More broadly, it is the three regions located furthest to the west (Brittany, Normandy, Pays de la Loire) that have seen the lowest rate changes since 2010. In Brittany, you have to pay 171 euros (i.e. an increase of 18.75% since 2010), in Normandy it costs 190 euros (+25% since 2010) and in Pays-de-la-Loire 179 euros (+19.33%).

On the other hand, the South-East regions have posted the largest increases for 12 years. The cause? An increase in the number of burglaries and climatic disasters. Occitania recorded a surge in home insurance from 40.61% to 232 euros and PACA from 33.33% to 240 euros. Unsurprisingly, Ile-de-France remains the most expensive region to insure housing with an average cost of 242 euros per year (+ 32% vs 2010).

For the other regions, here are the rates for home insurance: In Hauts-de-France, the cost of home insurance is 207 euros, an increase of 30.19% since 2010. In Grand Est, it reached 193 euros, an increase of 31.29%. In the Centre-Val de Loire, it is 197 euros (+27.92% since 2010). In Bourgogne-Franche-Compté, you have to pay an average of 188 euros for your home insurance (27.89% since 2010). The price of home insurance has increased by 30.77% since 2010 in New Aquitaine, to 204 euros. And finally, in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, it increased by 28.13% to 205 euros.

Olivier Moustacakis recalls that “in this context, remaining faithful to your insurer is not a good calculation. Going around the market every eighteen to twenty-four months makes it possible to find more interesting offers”. According to him, changing home insurance can save up to 40%.
