DECRYPTION – Natural disasters will cost more and more in France, in particular because of the drought.
In this historically hot spring, France is once again threatened with drought. The lack of rain is already hurting crops. But, we know less, drought also causes major and long-term damage to a very large number of homes. It is even one of the main causes in France of disasters caused by global warming. More than half of the stock of individual houses is likely to be affected, according to the Court of Auditors.
Indeed, the movement of the soil on clay soils causes damage to the building. This phenomenon is the result of soil shrinkage when it is dry and swelling when it rains. It can dislocate the pavements, weaken the foundations and crack the houses, to the point that some become uninhabitable. The phenomenon – known as clay shrinkage-swelling (RGA) – is amplified by climate change.
