E-ink technology for the secondary screen of the folding iPhone?

While its competitor Samsung is all about foldable screens, Apple does not currently show any interest in this technology. However, according to recent rumors, the Cupertino company intends to offer an iPhone or iPad with a foldable screen one day.

And according to a publication by analyst Ming Chi Kuo, it could use e-ink technology on this future product.

“Apple is testing e-ink’s electronic paper display (EPD) for its upcoming foldable device’s cover screen and tablet-like apps”we read in this publication.

“The color EPD has the potential to become a consumer solution for the much-needed cover/second screen of foldable devices due to its excellent power saving”adds the analyst.

Thus, the e-ink screen would therefore not be used for the foldable screen, which will be the main screen, but for the cover screen that one can use when the foldable device is closed. In any case, if Apple uses this technology, it would be a novelty, since until now the other brands have used conventional screens (OLED) for this coverage.

Nevertheless, Apple would not be the first brand to equip a smartphone with an e-ink screen. A few years ago, the Russian brand YotaPone made the buzz by unveiling a smartphone with two screens. The main screen was an LCD, a classic technology, while the secondary screen on the back was an e-ink screen. Although this type of screen does not provide the same quality as OLEDs or LCDs, it consumes very little energy. Therefore, it is ideal for displaying notifications, or for basic functionality. This is why, for example, e-ink is often used for e-readers.

Apple foldable screen device: Not for a long time

As usual, this information is not official and therefore caution is always advised. Also, even if Apple explores technologies that could later be used in a folding iPhone or iPad, the product probably won’t be released for a long time.

In a previous tweet, the same analyst, Ming Chi Kuo, even corrected his predictions.

“I expected Apple to launch a foldable iPhone as soon as 2024 in my reports last year, but it’s now clear that this prediction needs to be revised. I predict that Apple could launch its first foldable product in 2025 at the earliest, which could be a foldable iPad or a hybrid of iPad and iPhone”Kuo explained in April.

Another analyst, Ross Young, agrees. “We have delayed our expectations for Apple’s entry into the foldable smartphone market by two years to 2025 after discussions with our supply chain contacts. The company does not seem to be in a rush to enter the foldable smartphone market, and it may even take longer than that”he wrote in February.

Meanwhile, Samsung flexes its muscles

As mentioned above, while Apple still seems to be hesitating, Samsung is all about foldable screens. The Korean giant saw its shipments quadruple in 2021 and expects these shipments to grow 10 times by 2023. Currently, the Korean giant is preparing to launch the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 successors, which should be done in August.

At the same time, Samsung is also developing new formats. The manufacturer is exploring, for example, devices with 3-fold screens, foldable screen PCs, as well as smartphones or tablets with roll-up screens. Moreover, during a trade show, Samsung recently demonstrated these technologies.
